Which is the lesser of two evils?

Boy is almost 5.

1) Wake kid up and do everything for him (take him to the potty, brush his teeth, nag/beg him to drink more than 3 ounces of milk/half a slice of toast, put him in the shower, take him out of the shower, dress him, etc.) so he's not late for school. (Get late for school anyway.)

2) Wake kid up and let him dawdle and waste time doing everything himself (wasting time includes crying and whining about how he wants you to do it for him), finally culminating in lots of nagging/haranguing/scolding. Get (even more) late for school.

Waking him up early doesn't work, he'll just dawdle more. I've been handling him by myself the last three days because Hubby is out of town for work. Usually we tag-team (he'll handle Boy while I handle Baby), and we still get out the door late.

Hubby favors approach #1, which results in less crying. I favor approach #2, which will hopefully result in a more independent kid a few years down the line (although it could backfire and set up a pattern of yelling that lasts until adulthood noidonotspeakfrompersonalexperiencewhydoyouask?).
